In 1830 the Columbus statue was created by Lord Carmichael as a result of his discovery and has been standing at the front of Government House, the official residence of the Governor General of The Bahamas.
Did Columbus discover San Salvador in 1492, or did he meet and destroy a thriving nation with its own culture? This has been the debate for decades.
For some Christopher Columbus is a hero while for many he was nothing more than a pilferer and murderer.
Whatever is your view of this Italian born Explorer the Columbus statue met its destruction and for many this was a moment of Justice. It was a moment of quiet celebration for the historically woke of the country when a local resident beginning swinging at the statue with his maul, destroying the right leg of the statue. For some- this indeed was horrifying while others this was celebratory moment.
The first inhabitants of The Bahamas- The Arawak Indians met their demise due to disease and enforced slave labor brought about by their exchange with Columbus’ crew. As a result of this exchange, the Arawaks are now extinct.
As a result of these factors it is fitting that the statue be removed. What is your view?
